Jul. 25th, 2008 10:37 pm Aaron's Art "Flood Sale"

[info]aaronace, a friend and great artist who's done work for Cubicle 7 in the past and is currently working on a future Victoriana cover for us, suffered from a flash flood a few days ago which has wrecked the ground floor of his place. He's having a 'Flood Sale' to raise some extra cash so if you've ever fancied a signed piece of his art now is the time to get your orders in! He's only charging $15 per piece with free postage in the US.

I've already put in an order for, er, a few bits :p

Anyway, his words:

-----
$15 for signed 9"x12" prints, with free shipping in the US. You can browse through this journal ([info]aaronace) or my flickr gallery. If you see something you like, drop me a line at aaronace [at] gmail [dot] com, and I'll let you know if it's available.
-----

Here's a few samples of his work...

Jul. 25th, 2008 10:37 am Dork Tower, Friday, July 25

Here's Friday's Dork Tower:

The problems with the website remain. On the plus side, it's sped up work on the new, improved website. Either the current site will be fixed, or the new design up and running, soon. Fingers crossed

Until then, please look for new cartoons on any of the following:

My LiveJournal Page

My MySpace Page

My Blogspot blog (C'mon! Who's gonna be the first person to comment over at the new Blogspot mirror site?)

****

Finishing up Munchkin Quest II this weekend. So, yay!I may even get a chance to continue cleaning and reorganizing the office, afterwards.

****

EDIT: I had no idea so many people didn't realize Dork Tower Miniatures existed. They do, and are awesome, produced by Steve Jackson Games and sculpted by legendary designer Tom Meier. They can be found at Warehouse 23, or ordered directly from your Friendly Neighborhood Games or Comics Store.

Jul. 25th, 2008 01:28 am Russia To Ban Emo's, Goths and Halloween - No Really...

You'd be excused to think this was a joke but the Russian Government is actually proposing a bill called "Government Strategy in the Sphere of Spiritual and Ethical Education" which calls for heavy regulation of EMO sites, banning young people dressed as emo's from entering schools and government buildings. EMO's aren't the only ones being officially blacklisted though - goths and skinheads have also been thrown in at the deep end of official disapproval and the need for re-education of their ways...

It's not the first time that EMO has been targeted by the state in Russia either...

-----
In November, the Novgorod regional education department issued a letter to all schools in the region with a description of emo culture, saying the "dream of every [emo] is to die in a warm bath from the blood of cutting their wrists."

The branch distributed the letter at the behest of the regional branch of the Federal Security Service, according to the bill's footnotes.

One school in Chelyabinsk has banned emo attire, saying it violates the Constitution because it promotes "violence," the news agency Novy Region reported.

Igor Ponkin, one of the bill's authors and a member of the Interior Ministry's public oversight council, described emo culture as a "social danger" that demands measures such as dress codes in schools, Internet regulation and state-sponsored after-school activities.
-----

Together with proposals to combat child alcoholism and pornography, the policy project outlines a raft of draconian measures such as a 10 p.m. curfew for all school-age children and a ban on tattoos and body-piercings.

Under the new measures, schools would be prohibited from celebrating Western holidays like Halloween and St. Valentine's Day, which are deemed inappropriate to "Russian culture." Toys in the shape of monsters or skeletons would be banned as "provoking aggression."

-----

The proposal also sets its sights on teenage subcultures such as emo, a style of hardcore punk, and goth, which lawmakers accuse of "cultivating bisexuality." Both styles, the legislation implies, are social scourges on a par with the skinhead movement, and must be eliminated from the social landscape.

"The country has overcome its economic crisis, but now we're faced with another kind of crisis -- a spiritual and moral one," says Natalia Karpovich, the deputy head of the Duma committee for family, women, and children that is the driving force behind the proposal.
-----

Some supporters of the project -- including Duma deputy and film director Stanislav Govorukhin -- take a particularly dim view of the country's young people, saying the new rules are chiefly intended for toddlers and children who have yet to be born. Children older than 2, says Govorukhin, are already "lost" and beyond rescue.

Most authorities, however, have been more inclusive. Russia's mounting demographic crisis means the country can ill afford to sign off on an entire generation as a hopeless cause, and the government in recent years has demonstrated a growing interest in young people. Pro-Kremlin youth groups like Nashi have found active backing, as have the newly formed Mishki, or Teddy Bears, which aims to instill patriotic values in 7- to 15-year-olds.

Critics say initiatives like Nashi and the Duma's new policy proposal smack of Soviet times, when children were heavily indoctrinated both at school and in state-sponsored movements like the Young Pioneers. Some skeptics fear the Kremlin will use the proposed legislation as a weapon to nip political dissent in the bud.

Government harassment of youth-based opposition movements like the now-outlawed National Bolsheviks only cements the conviction among many that the government's youth policy is highly selective and deeply political.

Jul. 25th, 2008 01:14 am Angus-less Live Journal Posts...

I've just realised how little 'Angus' content is on my Live Journal these days. I hardly ever talk about 'me' anymore. Indeed alot of my musings have either been about Cubicle 7 or the RPG industry as a whole with the occasional "who wants to go to the cinema this weekend" type post thrown in for good measure.

Truth is a number of things. I have actually been very busy doing work so there's not a lot of 'Angus' things tor eally talk about at the moment apart from work. Secondly, there are things happening in Angusland but there's a lot I don't neccesarily want to post to the wide world of the web.

I did however manage to break away from the computer this evening for a few and went to a pub I'd never been to before, in an area I don't know to meet up with a bunch of people I'd never met (apart from Tom whom I met about 4-6 weeks ago at The Dev and The Ballroom). This is quite a departure and accomplishment for me because I'm generally incredibly shy when meeting people I don't know outside of a work environment unless I have an introduction of somekind and the fact that I didn't suddenly decide i *should* actually stay at home and work all night (again) as a feeble excuse impressed me.

Anyway, I had a wonderful night and met some new wonderful people. Certainly will be doing that again!

Here's Monday's Dork Tower:

For some reason, there's a problem with the DorkTower.com web site, and I'm unable to post new cartoons there.

I hope this will be fixed shortly. But until then, please look for new cartoons on any of the following:

All of these will have essentially the same content, and cartoons should continue Monday-Wednesday-Friday as per usual, with cartoons going up (hopefully) no later than noon on any days.

Jul. 21st, 2008 11:37 pm West End Games For Sale

Well the news has officially broken that West End Games and all of its IPs are up for sale.

West End has a great history and some really nice IPs amongst it's catalogue.

Regardless of my love for Torg I still think the best selling point they have is the Junta Board Game, followed by the D6 License and then Torg.

I hope they find a buyer who will manage to keep all the IPs under one roof and be able to make a go of it.

I also hope that Eric (Gibson - current owner of WEG) manages to find a suitable buyer and gets a good price for the company and/or its parts. Eric was one of the guys I hung out with at GTS 2002 (I think it 02, maybe 03/04) and he's a really nice guy. Unfortunately though the games business takes a lot of love, blood sweat and tears but is a harsh mistress and rarely gives anything back in return. We've seen various companies over the years falter and fall and many owners/designers/employees burn out and turn their backs on what should be a great industry and hobby to work and play in. Fingers crossed and the best of luck to Eric for his future.

Jul. 21st, 2008 10:10 am HAPPY BIRTHDAY IGOR!!!

Today is Scott "Igor" Olman's birthday!

Scott's my good buddy, on whom Igor is loosely based.

I say "loosely," because if I wrote what Scott actually gets up to in a game into the comic strip, nobody would ever believe me.

Yes, that's right: I tone down Igor.

Happy birthday, Scott! And "HUZZAH!"

Jul. 20th, 2008 10:26 pm Gamesforce Fun!

(cross-posted in [info]leisuregames and [info]gaming_addicts)

Sean, David and I all attended </a></b></a>[info]gameforce this afternoon - a monthly games club I organise in Central London (just off Oxford Street  - for more info check out our Live Journal Community and feel free to pop along if you ever have the day free and are in/near London!).

The pub is really nice and also does great food (which is a reason to go to it with the added bonus of loads of gmaing! :p).

Anyway, David ran a game of Arkham Horror for a bunch of the guys and gals - and they managed to win!

Sean played several games of Sumo, playtested the very interesting 'Marpa's Tower' - a new game by Mark Hypolite which has elements of Carcassone and Backgammon in, and joined in on a bit of Arkham Horror action.

I played a game of Guillotine before joining the Marpa's Tower playtest (this is the second time I played the game - the first was the 2-player version with Mark, this afternoon we tried it with four-players and everyone enjoyed it plus Mark got some good feedback including a very good suggestion from Keith over one of the mechanics about Villager movement and attack which I think will probably be adopted. After Marpa's Tower I played Ticket to Ride (I *rule* Ticket to Ride - rarely have I been beaten, and yes that is an open challenge :p) and then, after very briefly making a cameo appearence in the closing stages of the Arkham Horror game, I joined in the No Thanks game.

It was a great afternoon and it's a shame that I'm going to be missing the August event (I'll be over in Indianapolis for US GenCon doubling up as a Cubicle 7 and Leisure Games not-so-undercover agent :p) but I know David will certainyl be there! I'll be returning in September though for that thrashing at Ticket to Ride I'm sure will be waiting for me now :p

Best wishes,

Angus

Jul. 20th, 2008 09:32 pm Doctor Horrible Act III - Thoughts

Ok, that was a *long* 15 minutes. I couldn't watch it yesterday when I posted because the video kept jamming. Apparently a number of friends had problems viewing it yesterday so i'm guessing the amount of people trying to access Act III jammed and/or slowed the site.

So I finally just managed to watch the third and final Act of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and... I can honestly say it wasn't what I predicted on Friday. It was very good though and I look forward to seeing what Joss Whedon and co do with it on the DVD when it's released and beyond that. There's the 'Captain Hammer Comic' for starters or the t-shirt range.

Anyway, it was a great little 3-part supervillian musical and I hope more is to follow...

So...who the heck is still around on a Friday evening/night? What are you up to right now? And why are you still here?

Today's Dork Tower is up...later than I'd have wished. Friday afternoons are dead times, online, and comments few and far between. Sigh. I suppose everyone's got something better to do than cruise the nets, fihing for 'toony goodness...

Next up: a very clever gag from the Carter years...

****

I haven't been posting the cartoons up on my MySpace page, recently, because people tell me MySpace is playing silly buggers with the links (I simply cut-n-paste from here), and I haven't had time to look into it more. Not entirely sure why they SHOULDN'T work. But I pulled out of Suicide Girls (man, there must be a better way of phrasing that) after reformatting every entry to their standards just became too much of a hassle. With luck, that won't have to happen with MySpace. I'm just not sure when I'll get time to figure out what the problem is.

****

Look! Look! (Or rather "Listen! Listen!") I'm a Comic Book Expert! Grin.

Just in case you weren't awake at 7:10 am this morning or, indeed, listening to WOLX Radio, Madison, I was on-air, pretending to sound like I knew what I was talking about when it comes to the new Batman movie.

Actually, it didn't come out too badly. I'm not a big fan of doing this kind of thing, and, honestly, my heart was more into the Watchman trailer than The Dark Knight, but Fletch is a pal, and it came out almost like I knew what I was talking about.

****

Last week I found out what it was like to be booed by 7,500 people. That was actually quite fun.

This week I found out what it's like to lose quite a large sum of money. This wasn't so fun.

Lee Enterprises - owners of my old newspaper, the Wisconsin State Journal (it's a bit more complicated than that, but that'll do), just sent out their quarterly earnings. I had a bit of stock in the company from an old Employee Purchase Plan.

Anyway, that stock, which was once up to about $50 a share, plummeted to $3 over the last quarter, having dropped 90% in the last year alone.

My fault. I left the money in those stocks because I thought Lee Enterprises Upper Management were Ruthless Bastards Who Only Cared About The Bottom Line. What I forgot to take into account was, like much of the newspaper industry's upper management, they were STUPID Ruthless Bastards Who Only Cared About The Bottom Line.

Newspapers. Yeah. THEY'RE the future.

Honestly, what was I thinking?

****

Plus, the Subaru, which just had a new starter put in last year, was towed back to the garage this morning.

Why? well, ANOTHER starter, apparently, needs to be put in. Four hundred buck.

"But you just put in a new one last January," I explained, as patiently as I could after discovering I was already quite a bit poorer than I thought I was this time, last week.

"Yeah...the warranty just ran out."

I believe I shall stay in, this weekend...whimpering or drinking, Haven't really made my mind up, yet...SOMETHING self-destructive...

I've got it! Cartooning!

Jul. 18th, 2008 08:54 pm What the Earth looks like to Alien Astronomers...

I say this article earlier but couldn't post the link and video from work so saved it until now. It's odd seeing the Moon fly-by :p

From the New Scientist website:

"What would Earth look like to alien astronomers? If they had access to telescopes far more powerful than our own, it might look a lot like what the Deep Impact spacecraft recently saw from its vantage point 50 million kilometres away.

Over the course of one Earth day in May, the spacecraft snapped images every 15 minutes to produce a movie of the Moon gliding in front of our home planet, whose swirling clouds and continents rotated in and out of view."

Ok, my LJ here at work seems to playing up so I don;t get my usual 'Post An Entry' Screen so can' currently do links and stuff... so they'll have to wait until later.

But just wanted to say two things...

1. Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog - OMG. Fantastic. Joss Whedon is a genius.

2. The Watchmen Trailer - Looks F**king Fantastic, I can't wait :D

That is all. Hopefully I'll be able to post links when I get home and can share the love (although I know some of you have been watching Dr Horrible's blog already as I've seen you post your own comments and I've also seen links to the Watchmen trailer crop up today :p).

Jul. 17th, 2008 09:28 pm F22 Raptors Over Finchley?

Not sure what they were but we had four military jets fly over Finchley this evening when I was waiting for the bus home (about 8pm). Having just seen a video clip on the BBC from the Franborough airshow  the planes did look like the new F22 Raptors. But then again I have absolutely zero knowledge of military jets (or any type of plane) so it could have been pretty much anything (not Stealth Fighters though as they're distinctive enough that even I recognise them!).

Anyway, it was an odd sight to see them flyover and then have the noise of their passing hit and linger :p

Jul. 17th, 2008 11:00 am Dungeons & Dragons Character Record Sheets

IT MUST BE MINE: Occasional reviews of various things Cool and Otherwise

DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS RECORD SHEETS
Publisher: Wizards of the Coast
Page Count: 12
Price: $9.95

OK. If I'm gonna do some reviewing here, I really want to focus on the positive, rather than the negative. To point people towards what is good and grand in geekdom, not dwell in the muck and mire of mediocrity.

However...

I just picked up a copy of the Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition Character Record Sheets: retail price $9.95.

Now, I am a huge fan of Character Sheets, going all the way back to AD&D 1st Edition, circa When-Debbie-Harry-Was-Still-Enormously-Hot-And-ELO-Was-Still-Enormously-Groovy-And-Not-In-A-Post-Modern-Retro-Irony-Way.

Though largely superfluous (you could almost always just photocopy the character record pages from your handy-dandy core books, regardless of what game you had), commercial packs of Character Record Sheets represented potential in a way that merely Xeroxed copies simply couldn't - especially in the days when photocopiers produced more "good intentions" than "sharp, crisp copies."

Page after page of Exactly The Same Page, to my fevered young mind, seemed to signify nothing less than the dozens of characters just waiting to be a-rolled. This was a veritable Futures Market in Fantasy Roleplay Characters.

To this day (in much the same way a single-line adventure description in a convention program will) a brand-spankin' new pack of Character Sheets will catapult me back to the days when this was all still new, magical and limitless!

Now, I'm quite the fan of 4th Edition: I think it's a superb release that plays to my particular RPG style and strengths. So I was quite excited at the prospect of lovely, untouched Character Sheets simply awaiting the results of my dice rolling before legions of new characters would be at my beck and call.

Anyway, as I said, I picked up the Character Record Sheets Tuesday. Did I mention the price? Ten bucks, close as dammit?

And the package contains...

Four character record sheets.

Yes, four. In a lovely folder, mind you. The kind Target usually sells for $.99 during Back To School Sales.

Hold on! There's also...eight sheets of perforated Power and Magic Item cards (each contains eight blank cards), adding up to the "12 pages" advertised (didn't this originally start out at 32 pages, btw?).

And...and...

Oh. Wait. That's it...

No. Seriously?

Yup. In fact, the blurb on the back cover of the package even has the audacity to suggest that two of the character record sheets are a "BONUS!", as they are "widescreen-style...that doesn't crowd middle of the table ." So, like, with two of the sheets considered "BONUS!", the original release would have only had the two non-widescreen character sheets in it?

Now, as Character Sheets go, these are perfectly fine Character Sheets. They are concise and well laid-out, whether wide-screen or otherwise. And the cover art is just lovely, lovely stuff. My only niggling complaint would be that SPACE TO DRAW CHARACTERS SHOULD GO ON THE FRONT OF THE SHEETS, NOT THE BACK! But I'm biased like that (in much the same way, I walk around screaming SALT AND VINEGAR - BLUE! CHEESE AND ONION - GREEN! in a way that most sensible consumers simply don't).

Again: I do like D&D4. A lot. I like character record sheets. A lot. But WoTC's Dungeons & Dragons Character Record Sheets (did I mention retail price $9.95?) is simply one of the most absurd, almost...almost cynical releases I think I've ever seen in this industry. Not only is this not even in the same ballpark as Green Ronin's old Character Record Folio (retail price: $4.50) (IMHO, the apex of Character Record technology), it's several giant steps back from the basic pads of record sheets of yore.

Four sheets. Retail price: $9.95.

Yes, I can just go to Kinko's, and make more copies. I'll kinda have to, now. Or just download them for free, of course ("BONUS!" horizontal layout notwithstanding, that is). Yet free downloads are no excuse for a pricey printed product. The basic idea behind the package is sound: at $4.95, I might have gone for this. Even with eight more character sheets included, it might have slipped by, unnoticed. Yet as it stands...well, all this can possibly lead to is more blogs tiresomely spelling "Hasbro" as "Ha$bro," and nobody wants that.

Honestly...I...I really don't want to sound harsh, but...

Four sheets. Four sheets! Retail price: $9.95.

What a load of sheet.

I've either been feeling really knackered or been ill for the last few weeks. This in itself is tiring me out further as I have tons of things I need to be getting on with but just feel lethargic and in the need of lying down and sleeping.

Maybe a few early nights would help. Probably more than trying to get stuff done in front of the computer and not seeming to accomplish much in any rate. I'm also trying to find where my gym tokens have gone. I put them in that legendary *safe place* when we moved (yeah, back in mid-March) and haven't rediscovered them since. I really, really want to find them so I can start getting myself down to the gym 2-3 times a week as I'm sure that will help motivate me alot. I always feel so much mroe awake - both menatlly and physically - after a good workout... and really need to start feeling more that way than I am now or have been for a while.

The so-called 'credit crunch' is also on my mind at present. I have a number of plans - some of them fairly life changing - coming up in the next few months and with the financial problems that many friends, the country and the world seem to be feeling at the moment it does make you wonder if 'now' is the right time to follow some of them. But I think and feel it needs to be done regardless. Although finance raising for the company is taking longer than I had hoped - mianly due to a couple of core investors having a few problems/delays themselves. Nothing serious as yet but it is as added worry as I had hoped to have more cash to be playing with this right now - especially as the crunch convention season is about to hit us next month and that's never cheap to do.

I've also been a bit screwed over by another company who has decided not to pay a low four figure sum they owe me. Unfortunately I have to take some of the blame on that as I allowed an existing verbal agreement that had been honoured to continue when I should have had signed documents and correspondence off them. It's just we'd never had a problem with them before so it hadn't enetered my mind at the time. You live and learn though and I'm guessing it'll just be put down to a semi-costly learning experience. Still, the extra cash right now would be nice.

If you happen to know of a rich uncle looking to invest some money please let me know :p

Today's Dork Tower is up...

to see it.

****

According to today's Spam

Clinton Found Hanged In Bedroom (Bill, we're guessing)
Hilary Clinton vows revenge (for Bill's hanging, presumably)
Facebook hacked into, millions of accounts lost
Girl cuts off partner's ear with ice skate
Guy peddles girlfriend for hundred bucks (possibly after having his ear hacked off), but, on a more positive note:
Heath Ledger awarded posthumous oscar

[info]robin_d_laws says these can be turned into an Esoterrorists adventure seed. Me? I'm thinking GURPS Illuminati (admittedly mainly because I don't have Esoterrorists yet...)

So: who can com up with the best adventure using these nuggets?

The Great Luke Ski has passed on information for the Tom Smith (a core member of the Funny Music Project (FuMP)) fund raiser:

Part 1:

The Tom Smith Fund Raiser:
"Mr. Smith Goes To The Hospital: A Fast Fund Raiser For A Fast Filker"

Core FuMPer, filk legend, self-employed professional musician, and all around nice guy Tom Smith recently suffered a leg injury that will keep him off his feet all summer, simultaneously forcing him to cancel gigs while also racking up hospital bills. So Rob Balder and DJ Particle rallied the filk and comedy music scenes to submit over 40 Tom Smith cover songs by the likes of the great Luke Ski, Sudden Death, Worm Quartet, Possible Oscar, TV’s Kyle, Art Paul Schlosser, Odd Austin Aeschilman, ToyBoat, Steve MacDonald, and dozens more for an MP3 album to help Tom Smith get on his feet (pun intended, this is about Tom Smith after all). The price of this downloadable MP3 collection? As much as you feel you can afford right now, it’s up to you. To donate, follow this link. Thank you everyone.

Part 2:

The Tom Smith "Dead Again" Video Contest!

Create a fan-made video for Possible Oscar's cover of Tom Smith's "Dead Again", and you can win an MP3 player loaded with the entire Discosgraphies of Tom Smith, Possible Oscar, the great Luke Ski, Rob Balder, and the Funny Music Project: Volumes 1 through 9!
